He was looking to create an instrument that was basically a blend of the brass and woodwind instruments. And then, of course, his secondary goal was to name something after himself. To fulfill both these goals (and probably to make his dad proud), he created the saxophone.

The saxophone is made out of brass, but it is a woodwind instrument. Say it ain’t so/How can this be? It’s because whether an instrument is a brass or a woodwind isn’t determined by material, but by how the sound is produced. Please allow us to gloss over some detail here and say that the main difference in how sound is produced basically has to do with whether or not the player’s lips vibrate. Brass = Yes. Woodwinds = No.

So, to get back to the point, there are many, even several, types of saxophones. The four main kinds are the soprano, the alto, the tenor, and the baritone. The Big Band Experience showcases three of these: soprano, alto, and tenor. So, let’s take a little bit of a deeper look at these, shall we?

Aaron Moe takes care of soprano and alto duties while Ronny Loew holds tenor patrol.

The soprano saxophone is usually straight (think of the instrument Kenny G plays) and is similar in tone to the oboe.

The alto saxophone is larger than the soprano and, along with the tenor, is one of the most commonly played types of saxophones.

The tenor saxophone is lower and bigger than the soprano and alto. As shown in the picture above, you can spot a tenor saxophone by the bend in its neck (near the mouthpiece).

Famous saxophone players include the aforementioned Kenny G, John Coltrane, and Bill Clinton. Wearing sunglasses is often a prerequisite for playing the instrument.
In The Guardian's Word of Mouth Blog, Amy Fleming writes "sound is the final frontier in food presentation." According to research, sound affects the taste of food: tastes are intensified or lessened based on sound. Specifically, low-pitched sounds heighten bitter flavors and high-pitched sounds heighten sweet flavors.
The article provides a link to Condiment Junkie where you can try it out for yourself. You can play bitter - or sweet-enhancing sounds and see if you notice a change in the way your food tastes. Companies are betting it does - so much so that Ben & Jerry's is considering ice cream flavors with QR codes that "will allow eaters to access complementary sounds via their phones."

This raises important questions. Could high pitch sounds replace sugar? What food does big band music compliment? And, most importantly, if BBE were an ice cream flavor, what flavor would it be?Shaun Johnson Big Band Experiencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04582753262413603230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8677694133149534704.post-24217633709015165502014-06-06T08:46:00.000-07:002014-06-06T08:49:16.148-07:00Meet the TrumpetThe Trumpet? Oh, it’s terrific!

A while back we met the trombone, and today we’re going to meet another member of the brass
family, the trumpet. The trumpet is the smallest member of this family. Because of this, you
might expect the trumpet to feel badly about itself, but don’t worry: The trumpet is also the
highest member of the brass family, so it has that going for it.

The trumpet also gains a bit of clout by having been around for a long time—at least since 1500
BC. To put things into perspective, the earliest remains of domesticated ferrets have been dated
to 1500 BC. Wikipedia seems to think that’s important, so you should too.

The earliest trumpets were used as signaling devices for military and religious purposes—
not for music. Which is to say, Jeff Carver better stick with the musician thing as the military and
religious signaling industry isn't exactly flourishing.

Today’s trumpets usually have three valves; however, valves weren't added to the trumpet until
the 1800s. When a valve is pressed down, it lengthens the tubing, which, as we learned from our
lesson on the trombone, lowers the pitch of the instrument.

Speaking of the trombone, we lied a little when we said the trombone is the only instrument with
a slide. There is such a thing as a slide trumpet that has....you guessed it, a slide instead of or in
addition to, valves.

Some other fun facts about the trumpet:
1. Two trumpets were found in King Tut’s tomb.
2. Famous trumpet players include Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie.
3. There’s about 148 cm of tubing in a B-flat trumpet. That’s almost 5 feet.
In
Wilson Meredith’s Broadway hit, The Music
Man, it took “76 trombones to lead the big parade.” Why did it take so
many? Nobody knows. Except, probably, Wilson Meredith. It’s amazing that 76
trombones were required for this parade when you consider the Big Band
Experience needs only one—played by Steve Pikal.

instruments make up a large part of a big band’s sound. And today we’re going

The
trombone is the only instrument with a slide. This makes it the trombone’s key
feature (and the reason why the trombone stands out at brass family reunions). The
trombone player (trombonist, if you will) slides the slide to change the pitch.
The longer the slide is extended, the lower the pitch.

The
trombone is also the only wind instrument that, in theory, can achieve perfect
pitch at all times. Why? The slide, of course! Because the slide is continuous,
a trombonist can play an infinite number of pitches. This is different from
other instruments where the musician can only press down certain keys or valves.

So
the trombone slide is remarkable, but what else is cool about the trombone? The
most common types of trombone are the tenor and bass trombone, although there
are several different kinds, including the alto and the soprano. Okay, so
that’s not so much “cool” as it is a “fact.” Back to cool things about the
trombone:

March is Women’s History Month. While you can probably rattle off several of the male players of the big band era, how many female vocalists can you name? If you’re not sure of any, a good stab in the dark would be “Helen.” Helen Forrest, Helen Humes, Helen O’Connell, and Helen Ward were among the top vocalists of the day, which means your name pretty much had to be Helen to make it big. Well that’s not quite true, your name could also have been Martha (Tilton), Ella (Fitzgerald), Kitty (Kallen), or…the list goes on.

Read up on the three female vocalists (or “girl singers” as they were called) highlighted below who sang with the best the big band era had to offer, and keep in mind there were many more.

Ivie Anderson
Anderson joined Duke Ellington’s band in February 1931 and stayed until 1942. The night she joined Duke Ellington in 1931, the band broke all attendance records. In his autobiography, Music Is My Mistress, Ellington calls her his good luck charm, and she was one of the best—if not the best—vocalists with the band. It is Ivie Anderson who recorded “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” with Ellington in 1932.
Helen Forrest
Forrest was nicknamed “the voice of the name bands.” Why? Because she was the female vocalist for three of the biggest big bands of the time—Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James. Forrest sang with Shaw’s band from 1938 until the band dismantled in November 1939. In December of that same year, she started working with Benny Goodman, making 55 studio recordings with him. She stayed with Goodman until 1941, when she joined Harry James, with whom she stayed until 1943. In 1942 and 1943, she was voted the best female vocalist in the United States in the Down Beat magazine’s poll.

Billie Holiday
Early in her singing career, “Lady Day” worked as a big band singer. She started out with Count Bassie in 1937, recording hits like “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” In early 1938 she left (err, actually was asked to leave) the band. No worries, though, she soon found a gig with Artie Shaw, a job that made her one of the first black women to work with a white orchestra. After a little less than a year, Holiday left the band and was replaced by Helen Forrest (maybe there really is something to that “Helen” thing).

Things are just getting started…
Are you lusting after your sweetheart, trying to convince your sweetie that you’re the one? The perfect song for this stage in your hoped-for-relationship? “Can I Steal a Little Love.” Taking into consideration that stealing is technically illegal in all 50 states, the song promises that if the object of desire can prove the theft was wrong, the singer will give it back (but not before begging to be hugged, squeezed, and walked down the aisle).

Things are perfect…
You’re in love and things are going great? Well, that’s…. great! “My Girl Tonight” is the song for you. Don’t be fooled by the insinuation that this is just for tonight. This song takes you from your first kiss to your wedding to beyond. And who doesn't want a devotee who will follow “blindly where you go?” Put this one on repeat. Go ahead, swoon to the croon.

Things have gone sour…
Have you just broken up with your paramour? If so, you may be wondering what you’ll do now. Take a listen to “What’ll I Do.” It won’t provide you with any answers, but it will certainly remind you that you’re now stuck pining away after photographs and dreams. That’s tough stuff, but after a break up, do you really want to listen to happy music? Enter “One for My Baby,” where the “end of a brief episode” calls for music that’s “easy and sad.” And also several adult beverages.

Here’s hoping your Valentine’s Day finds you holding hands with the object of your affection. But, if not, console yourself with some good music and some candy hearts. Maybe some chocolate, too.

From the time we were young kids to now, people have always told us that when it comes to stage fright, it’s best to try to calm down. Whether it’s deep breathing exercises, being prepared with hours of practice, or avoiding thoughts of self-doubt, getting rid of nerves before performing has always been the goal. A new article published by Scientific American, however, states differently. The overall message of the article is “embrace the stage fright”.

Why? The articles states that “new research finds that people who try to relax away their performance anxiety actually mess up more than folks who just give in to the excitement.” Believe it or not, from this article, spinning your anxiety and nerves into enthusiasm actually works.

Another theory that goes along with turning nerves into excitement is the idea that nervous energy is necessary. You should be happy to feel anxiety because you are doing something you care about. If you don’t feel some sort of anxiety, you probably don’t care anymore. Even the most skilled public speakers get performance anxiety, but they take this negative and turn it into something positive by putting more enthusiasm and excitement into their work.

Want to try these theories for your next job interview, musical performance, or speech? Here are five steps to follow to try to turn your nerves into excitement!

1. Accept your anxiety
Most people want to cure anxiety or deny they’re feeling it, but fighting it only makes it stronger. Know that it’s natural to have some fear.

2. Take a few deep breaths
Many have heard this step, but how often do you actually do it? Making sure to take deep breaths calms you and gets your mind off of negative thoughts.

3. Tense and relax arms and legs
Doing this releases trapped nerve energy from your body getting rid of the “shakes” that some people experience.

4. Re-frame anxiety into excitement
You’re anxious because you care. This interaction is important to you, and there’s nothing wrong with that. This step is to refocus the nervous energy you are feeling and not hide from it. Re-define the feeling as an enthusiasm to do well.

5. Go for it NOW
No matter what you do, if you wait too long, your excitement will turn back into nervousness, so give yourself to the count of three and just go for it while you’re in a positive excited state.
Did Someone Order a Big Band?

Big Band music dominated the scene in the late 1930s and early 1940s, a time also known as the "Swing Era". The Swing Era was known for dance floors filled with jitterbugs and evokes images of tuxedo-clad big bands. Today, few big band dance halls exist, but that doesn't mean that big bands went away. Big bands have evolved with the times but they hold on to some of the same characteristics and values that their Swing Era descendants held closely. Here are three ways you can spot a Big Band today.

Number of musicians
They call it big band for a reason. A big band consists of large group with multiple sections for brass and rhythm. In comparison to improvised jazz combos, an arranger primarily crafts big band music in advance. A big band can be viewed as a team of musicians; it's up to the arranger and director to get the most out of his or her team's talents.

The sound
Big band sound consists of rhythm, brass, and woodwind instruments. Big bands today can be found playing all styles of jazz music respective to the swing era. While the big band sound has adapted with the times, there are still groups that cherish the original sound that big bands were known for in their heyday.

Fashion
Many big bands performed in ballrooms that had dress codes. Tuxedos are iconic to the swing era and therefore worn by big band musicians. Big band musicians today are often seen wearing more modern tuxedos which is just another way big band music continues to adapt to modern culture.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Wishes & More creates extraordinary experiences for wish children. The goal of this children’s charity is simple: grant wishes to children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses and provide hopeful hearts, happy memories and assistance to those who love them. This November, the Minnesota Wild's Matt Cooke wrote a new page in the memory book by inviting Wishes & More families to enjoy a Wild game in a box suite.
We believe that a wish experience can be a game-changer. This one belief guides us in everything we do. It inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve. One child, 6-year-old Esther who was adopted from Uganda, wished to go to Disney's Animal Kingdom to see some familiar animals. When her family of 17 and two helpers (picture below) made the journey from Cedar Rapids, Iowa in February of 2013, they became the largest for Wish party in Iowa history.

Bring the Five Essentials Below

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The "Spirit of the Season" Holiday Tour is here and while Shaun and the gang are enjoying each stop along the way, they find themselves in the middle of a daunting artic road trip. Their Midwestern journey has inspired the following five travel essentials for a band on the road.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">1) Tea
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Drinking tea in moderation can be a vocalist's best practice. Hot or warm tea loosens the phlegm on a singer's vocal chords and has an overall soothing effect. For a sore throat, try a "throat coat" tea mixed with a small dose of honey. If caffeine intake is a concern, try green tea as an alternative. It's also important to remember that while tea can be a great tool, always stay hydrated with water.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2) An Opposite Genre
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Your band will likely eat, sleep, and breath the same set of songs and same genre of music for the duration of the tour. While this should be a good thing (hopefully you are performing music that you are passionate about), it can be helpful to have a completely different genre to listen to for recreation. For example, according to this <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">article<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">, the opposite genre of big band music is "aggrotech" music.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">3) Social Media
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Whether you are riding in a top of the line tour bus or something your dad lent you, a road trip is a unique opportunity to build your band's brand on social media. Facebook and Twitter pages are standard platforms, but sites such as Instagram, Pinterest, and even Snapchat are also effective ways to share pictures, video, and anything else that happened during your travels.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">What's the inside of your ride look like?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4) Smartphone Apps
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The smartphone world provides an ever-growing selection of travel apps that can take the stress out of any road trip. This <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">app<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> tracks gas mileage and this <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">one<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> provides a professional yet inexpensive way to film your band's most memorable encounters. There are also plenty of apps like Urbanspoon to help you find the perfect restaurant in an unfamiliar town.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">5) Extra Gear
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Packing back-up equipment might seem like an extra burden (and less leg room), but when someone drops a microphone on concrete, breaks a guitar string, or forgets a mic-stand, whoever packed an "extra" will be deemed a hero. In addition to packing back-up equipment, be sure to double and triple-check that you have all the equipment you need.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The true roots of big band music began in 1898 in New Orleans. Groups of African-Americans bought decommissioned military instruments and played them in brand new way. Their approach was unconventional and offbeat in comparison to the European concept of rhythm. When the African-American groups' new style was molded with traditional European music, the genre of "ragtime" was born.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Fletcher Henderson

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Flash forward two decades - ragtime's popularity led to the birth of orchestral "dance bands". Fletcher Henderson, a chemistry major from Columbia University, left the chemistry realm and returned to another passion of his - music. By the mid 1920s, Henderson experienced mild success as an arranger for the band he assembled, which included jazz legend Louis Armstrong. When Armstrong joined the band in 1924, Henderson started to incorporate jazz and blues styles into the band's arrangements. At the time, no one had ever attempted to do so with a "big" band (Henderson's band had roughly 11 musicians). Although they quickly became known as the "best African-American band in New York", the band, Henderson, and the new genre of music struggled to gain national attention.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In 1935, jazz and swing musician Benny Goodman was the leader of a talented "dance" orchestra that was set to perform as a house band for the radio program "Let's Dance". Renowned producer and friend of Goodman, John Hammond, suggested that Goodman buy a few charts (music arrangements) from Fletcher Henderson. Goodman agreed to do so and his exceptional group of musicians - who were much more talented than Henderson's band - brought new life to Henderson's arrangements. The fusion of Henderson's arrangement ability and Goodman's musicians launched big band music into the national spotlight.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Current State of Big Band
Due to the talent and work of Henderson, Goodman, and others, the genre reached the peak of its mainstream popularity in the 1940s. Since then, performers like Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Sam Rivers, Tony Bennett, and Michael Buble have carried the big band torch. While the big band genre's following has become intimate, many critics believe the state of current big band music performances fall into one of two states.

First, the "state of precision", in which a group's individual musicians play without ego. The goal of this state is to forgo the talents of individuals in hopes of bringing the arranger's and or composer's true intentions to life. While this state has merit, the second state of a big band is looked upon more fondly. This state expresses both the composer and individual musician completely by allowing talented soloists to enhance the composer and arrangers original song structure - without making such solos all about the individual musician.

On December 5, at 7:30pm, the first of ten December shows will treat Minnesota’s third largest city to a night of contemporary big band music with a pop flair at Mayo Civic Center's Presentation Hall. The folllowing is a brief background on the Rochester venue and a list of tips for attending the event.

Rochester has rich tradition of performing arts and Shaun Johnson BBE could not be more honored to kick off the tour in such a storied city. The Mayo Civic Center, a venue that also has a rich history, has four main performance facilities. Presentation Hall, the premier concert facility, is where Shaun and a collection of superior big band musicians will take the stage on December 5.

In 1938, community leaders deemed the original “Mayo Civic Auditorium” as the area’s premier entertainment venue. Since then, the city has continued to expand and update its facilities. Now the largest event center in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa, the Mayo Civic Center plays host to over 1300 events per year. The way in which Mayo Civic Center is positioned in the Rochester community makes it an ideal place to host a winter concert. Here are a few tips for attending the show:

Parking
• Look for city wide “Parking Logos”. They will direct you to open parking lots and ramps.
• Rochester meter parking and parking ramps are FREE after 5pm.
• In addition to the ramps, Civic Center “South” Lot has 240+ parking spaces available.

Get Involved
I wanted people to see the beginning of this band and, to that end, decided to put rehearsals, special guests, practices, and first read-throughs on the BBE YouTube channelhttp://www.youtube.com/gobos2.

I thought about calling the CD, "YouTube Sessions" but decided that we may get into some legal gray areas with that title... so instead, I named it after the first song we recorded for the album. Like our shows, we featured the whole band as well as smaller configurations to highlight the MANY talents of the instrumentalists.

I chose songs which run the gamut, but which are all in the style of big band or at least the BBE's version of a big band. So, you will get to hear "Spiderman" and "Can I Steal a Little Love" from our show, but you will also hear Jeff Carver (our trumpet player) play swampy, New Orlean's style jazz licks on "Devil's in the Jukebox" before switching to sweet melodies on the title track. You will hear our intern, Nick, join in on the harmonies of Citizen Cope's "Brother Lee," my a cappella peer, Greg Bannwarth, add vocal percussion to "Birth of the Blues," Aaron Moe, make you feel like you just stepped into the Copa Room on "One for My Baby (And Another One for the Road)," and hear Dave Stanoch (band leader and percussionist) on a special, live bonus track - just as if he was in your living room. Too, we've included "Hallelujah" and "Go Light Your World" based solely on your requests.

I cannot wait to see where we go from here. I know I will look back on the days of recording with the best of memories, but I'm already looking ahead with even more excitement to your response.

Do you ever wonder what music was like before iPods and Mp3 players? For starters, audio devices weren’t as compact as they are now and you couldn’t download music with the click of a button. Here is a brief history of recording that will explain just how far we’ve come in the world of music!

The Record Player: 1920s

Recording technology started out with an acoustic horn instead of electric motors or amplifiers. The earlier record players relied on acoustic horns. However, as home radios became more popular the record player evolved. People started purchasing the record player that had electric motors or amplifiers for better sound.

The Tape Recorder: 1940s-1950s

Tape recording brought a more convenient and inexpensive option to the music recording industry. It allowed producers to alter the music. For example, they were able to cut sounds out, rearrange sounds, compile recordings, mix sounds and fade sound in or out. Before these features musicians either had to record their song perfectly or they had to remake the entire recording.

Stereo Sound: 1950s-1960s

Stereo sound included two microphones, two amplifiers and two loudspeakers. The first stereo sound recordings were available on reel-to-reel tape.

The Cassette: 1960s-1980s

Cassettes ruled the music world for decades. Cassettes were the most popular recording devices for home recording and pre-recording listening applications. The cassette was the first movement toward personal audio.

The CD: 1990s-Present

When the compact audio disc (CD) was first introduced it wasn’t a big hit. It took almost a decade for the CD to become more popular than the cassette but the CD eventually became the most popular home recording format. Today, iPods and Mp3 players have overtaken the CD.

If music recording had not evolved, we wouldn’t get to hear the great beats or the music effects as well as we do today. Musicians weren’t able to make a mistake while recording unless they wanted to re-record the whole song! Today we have the privilege of listening to music whenever and wherever we want to. The best part is, now we can listen to Big Band Music the right way—with ample volume and much appreciation!

1. Do you ever get nervous before a performance?
I do tend to get nervous before a performance. Often, the first song (and the audience's response) dictates the feel of each show for me. I have gleaned tips and tricks from voice lesson teachers and mentors to lessen the impact of that initial adrenaline rush, but I don't know that I've ever stepped on stage without a bit of fear. Healthy? I hope so. Too, it is easier for me to sing for strangers and much more difficult if I have close friends and family that I can see. I suppose I watch their reaction more closely and lose myself a little less in the songs.

2. Who is your favorite singer?
My favorite singer changes with my favorite ice cream. By that I mean that I love ALL ice cream and am willing to try any flavor that is labeled as such. I typically download 10 to 20 songs per week... artist's I've recently discovered or been turned on to by friends, artists I've read about or met in passing. I hesitate to make a list, as I will read the list next week and wonder what I was thinking. While I answered emails last night, my playlist included: "Golden" by Lady Antebellum, "February Seven" by the Avett Brothers, "Here Comes My Man" by the Gaslight Anthem, "The Way You Look Tonight" by Adam Levine, "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash, "Let it Be" the Beatle's "naked" mix, "The Sound of a Million Dreams" by David Nail, "One Lovely Day" by Citizen Cope, "Runaways" by the Killers, "Everybody Talks" by Neon Trees, "No Words" by the Script, "Gawd Above" by John Fullbright, and "I've Got a Crush on You" by Mayer Hawthorne.

3. What is your most memorable performance?
I would have to say my most memorable performance - as of late - was actually in my adopted hometown, Saint Cloud, MN. After we had finished the final chord of"Hallelujah" (about 1/2 way through the first half that evening), a gentleman from the balcony to my right stood up and shouted "Bravo!" I've performed on 1000's of stages over the last decade and don't remember that ever happening. Sometimes, it's the little things...

4. Which venue is your favorite (in which to perform)?
Typically, we perform in theaters, and some theaters definitely give off a vibe because of their history or because of cutting-edge technology, etc. But I have to say that my favorite venue always comes down to the people who populate it. Whether we perform for 30,000 or 30, the show's success hinges on the relationship between myself and the audience members. When those two are in synch, there is absolutely no better rush.

5. What is your all time favorite song?
Unfortunately, I don't have an all time favorite song. I like songs for different reasons... for perfection, for storytelling, for mood and emotion. To me, music can bridge all gaps. Two people who don't understand each other's dialects can still find common ground in a melody. I wish that, like a movie, our lives had a soundtrack, and I suppose (in some ways) they do. So at this moment, I may love Ray Charles, and his expression may fit my needs but in a few minutes, I will be moved by an up and coming songwriter from Nashville.

6. What is your favorite song to perform?
Oftentimes I like to perform the song that is the newest to the show. At that point, I am still experimenting... still a bit nervous... and am not sure where the song will "go," or where it might fit. The newest songs tend to have an energy that can't be exactly duplicated as the song ages. Currently, I love performing our version of "Spiderman."

7. What is the funniest thing that ever happened during a performance?
We are a fairly loose group and are able to roll with the proverbial punches. Sometimes, the funniest moments are inside jokes with a bunch of guys you have gotten to know throughout the tour. I'm not sure if it's funny, but I once performed at a college in West Virginia (which shall remain nameless) during Thanksgiving break. The people who hired us forgot that nearly the entire student body would be gone. so we ended up performing for a few foreign exchange students who could not return home for the holidays, and some food service workers who'd pop their heads out from the kitchen in between baking tasks.

8. What is the largest audience you have performed for?

32,000 people. The size was a little disconcerting. I remember seeing people clap and cheer but then hearing those cheers seconds later. However, I think I could get used to it. Ha!

9. What is Jay Leno like?
I met him briefly before a show in Southern California. I'm sure he remembers me clearly. Okay, maybe not. He looked just like he did on TV, but we did not become friends. He watched a bit of our show and we watched a little of his.

10. What is your favorite book?
I like anything that is historical and/or non-fiction. However, my dad used to tell me that learning should be a challenge (Chemistry for me), so I do try to deviate... to push the boundaries. Recently I loved a short book entitled "The River of Doubt" (about Theodore Roosevelt) and am currently reading "Why Does the World Exist."

Big Band is a type of musical ensemble and is associated with jazz and the Swing era. Big Band music generally consists of rhythm, brass, and woodwind instruments. This type of music originated in the United States in the 1920's. Around 1916 bandleaders like Paul Whiteman and Vincent Lopez took
elements of "sweet sounds" that people liked to dance to. They then decided to increase the size of their bands until they were actually considered orchestras.

As a decade of rebellion, the Roaring 20's was made for jazz. The young and the hip loved anything new and exciting. However, the exciting new sounds were ultimately the irresistible force behind society's acceptance of jazz and Big Band music.

As World War II came about, the big bands reached their apex in popularity. It was unpleasant times and the mood of the country turned to sentimental sounds. As popular as these bands were on radio and records, there began to be a severe shortage of able musicians as most males were being drawn into the armed forces.

Today Big Band Music is making a comeback with bandleaders like Michael Bublé and Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience. These artists bring back a time of classic rhythms and harmonies with a mix of todays "pop" music.Shaun Johnson Big Band Experiencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04582753262413603230noreply@blogger.com0
